Genting Highlands, Malaysia
12.13.08 (9:19 am)   [edit]

If I had only stayed in the Kuala Lumpur city centre , and at Genting Highlands , during my Malaysian holiday (vacation), I probably would have said that I loved Malaysia, because money has been spent in these areas, on design and maintenance, which makes for comfortable, clean, beautiful experiences.  However I stayed, most of the time, in a non tourist area, in Cheras .

After the humidity of KL, Genting Highland s, up above the clouds in the mountains, was a delightfully cool change.  I travelled there by coach from KL, followed by the Skyway , which made me scream when we took off with nothing but air beneath us - and look at those simple-looking hooks which held our cable cars aloft!

Skyway to Genting Highlands, Malaysia

It was magical, traveling high, high, high up into the sky, above the gorgeous, almost silent rainforest which inspired me with reverence, through the clouds (!) to our destination.  I just had to kiss the man next to me, in a cloud!

Actually on the way down by Genting Skyway the next day there was some kind of electrical fault which made our cable car stop sometimes.  It was so scary to have the cable car _bounce_ up and down!  I do believe I squealed a few times.

There was no need for air conditioning in the Genting Highlands , because it is so delightfully cool (about 20 degrees celsius?)!  I stayed at the First World Hotel, the world's largest hotel, with the most rooms (over 6,000 I think, in two towers), apparently!  I would have stayed in the best standard of rooms they had, but they were all booked out (I just rolled up to the reservations desk without a reservation), so I stayed in the second best type - and still it was inexpensive, by Australian standards.  I didn't have to queue up to check in, I just went to the check in area for the most expensive/luxurious rooms, so only had to wait for a short while.

Thank-you to the young woman who was in my cable car, who worked in the casino at GH, who escorted me all the way to the First World Hotel reservation desk, which was such a long & winding route - and who wouldn't take a reward!

Indoor theme park/multi level shopping mall at Genting Highlands - a night view

At Genting Highlands there are theme parks both inside and outside!  All the hotels are accessible indoors!  It's a multi level shopping mall of international brand shops (stores), as well as a theme park.  I noticed that the food is more expensive at Genting Highlands than elsewhere.

I didn't even go on any rides, nor did I venture outside:

I think people either go to Genting Highlands for the theme park , for romance, or to gamble in the casino, mainly.

I only had one night there, two would have been better.  It's marvellous that a free breakfast seems to be included at most Malaysian hotels?  I enjoyed the buffet breakfast at First World Hotel, which reminded me of the buffet breakfasts I've had at the Hilton in Brisbane , Queensland, Australia, and at Novotel Twin Waters Resort , on Queensland's Sunshine Coast , Australia.

What particularly amazed me was that there were hardly any white people there, at Genting, at all!  It's an international standard resort, full of international brand name shops, but it seems to be a great secret from the whites!  hehe

There are some great photos of Genting, and the Skyway, here.

PS Please check out all the above links, which I have spent so long finding for you?

The pictures are really beautiful, I am afraid of heights, so that ride looks very scary.
Thanks for sharing.

Thank-you Barnabus, for that great suggestion, which I've now used. I had heard of tinyurl previously of course, just hadn't used it.

Wow, Genting has changed a lot in the 20-something years since I was last there. Most pple here go for the casino I think and the younger ones for the rides.
