A Kingfisher in Distress
03.13.07 (10:14 am)   [edit]

I was working in the kitchen when I heard a "thud".  I finished what I was doing, then went to investigate.  It had sounded like a bird had flown into one of our glass doors.  Sure enough, this is what I found:

A kingfisher after flying into a glass door

A poor little kingfisher, breathing rapidly.  I said prayers for it, watched it for a few minutes, then went away to do something else.

I came back after about ten minutes, and found it standing up!  It was standing quite still, obviously thinking "What the?"  "Where am I?"  "Who am I?"

A kingfisher standing after flying into a glass door.

These photos were taken through the glass door, that's why they're not clear.  I didn't want to disturb him/her.

Its left claws seem twisted, I hope it didn't break its leg?

A kingfisher closeup

I went away and came back ten minutes later, just in time to see the kingfisher turn his head to the left, back again, then fly off, fast!

It was the longest stunned bird recovery I have ever witnessed.

Maybe you clean those windows too well? Poor little bird. Sometimes, little birds fly into my carport and cannot find the way back to freedom. The get quite upset, and exhausted. Finally when the give up the struggle and land on th floor, the hop out to the sunlight and to freedom. Birds, I guess, are kind of dumb. But there's a lesson worth learning in all of this. One being, of course, don't dive full-force into a plexyglass window.

Wow! You have great birds at your house! So glad the little guy was okay. I have birds fly into my office window pretty regularly. It's distressing.

Nature has its own ways of helping stranded birds to right themselves to freedom.

I had one get in the house the other day. It was cool and I had left the window open so we could hear the birds on the bird feeder. Heard a noise like someone was in the kitchen but when I went to look, didn't see anything. I went back and a sparrow followed me into the living room. Did a couple of laps around the room before flying straight into a mirror. (I wonder why, when it saw the "other" bird coming straight at him, it didn't try to get out of the way.) It perched on the ceiling fan, trying to find a way out, so I opened the front door and out it went. My son thought it was pretty exciting.

Great pictures.

I think he's fine now, SA. He flew off quickly when he recovered.

Actually, birds are more intelligent than we used to think.

This one was outside on the verandah. Luckily I have security/insect screens on my windows.

I have a bird which has damaged the rear vision mirrors on my car, pecking at its refection!
