The Cane Toad Invasion
02.27.07 (3:44 pm)   [edit]

Cane toads were introduced into Australia to control cane beetles in 1935.

Unfortunately that objective was not achieved, and because cane toads are prolific breeders, with very few predators in Australia - they're toxic to most of our native animals, & to pets, if they do try to eat them - they quickly became pests.

"...The cane toad is poisonous in all its life stages, from egg to adult. Adult cane toads produce venom from glands over their upper surface, but especially from bulging glands on their shoulders — these exude the venom when the toad is provoked. While some birds and a few other native predators have learned to avoid the poison glands of adult toads, almost anything that eats the toad dies rapidly from heart failure. The poison is absorbed through body tissues such as those of the eyes, mouth and nose, so that even mouthing the toad can cause death..."  Source

Western Australians are freaked out about cane toads reaching their state, read about it here.

In the Northern Territory (of Australia) aka The Top End, one can trade toads for beer vouchers!  The toads are put down humanely by the RSPCA.

Some Australians practise their golf swing using toads instead of golf balls.

My significant other runs over toads if he sees any on the road while driving at night.

I swerve to miss them.  I figure it's not their fault that their ancestors were transported here against their will - so why should I make them suffer?  Besides, the squish sound is sickening.

STOP PRESS!

Monsoon rains in Darwin in the Northern Territory have flushed out a cane toad the size of a dinner plate.

The grounds keeper at the city's Gardens Golf Course arrived early this morning to discover a toad so big it that fills the bottom of a bucket.

Golf course spokeswoman Maureen O'Sullivan says the grounds keeper could not believe how much bigger they grow in the NT.

"Phillip lived in Queensland for many, many years and he says he has never seen one as big as this one," he said.

"He was astounded at his find. He couldn't believe his eyes actually. He said he's just never ever seen one as big."

I like frogs, but have always avoided toads, because as a child I was taught that toads can spit poison.  This web page confuses the issue by stating:

"Toads do not spit or squirt the poison as commonly believed"

but then finishing with:

"Warning: the toad's poison can be squirted up to 2 metres (6') so if you must handle a cane toad, make sure you're wearing gloves and have full eye protection.)"!

ACK! Heebie Jeebie's would be the understatement for me right now, lol. Never been a big fan of frogs and most definitely not these guys :)

Nasty looking creatures. I can't believe people play golf with them. You're right--they can't help it that they got brought there.

I wonder if anybody does some licking might get high or not, due to the fact that few individual(s) already licked the skin from those poisonous from South American and some of them got high.

I wonder what country the toad was imported from. Besides, small percentage of those poisonous could benefit people with cancer.

Yes they'd win no beauty contests, & we don't usually look at them up close, just give them a wide berth.

All the more reason to keep away from them.

They don't actually play golf with them ggirl, & unfortunately, although I've read that hitting a toad with a golf club makes a loud noise, it doesn't necessarily kill them instantly.

"In attempts to control the native Cane Beetle, 102 Cane Toads were introduced to Australia from Hawaii in June 1935." according to Wikipedia, however they are native to Central & South America.

Yes alienflea, I have read that it is possible to get high from licking a cane toad, however it is also possible to get dead in 15 minutes due to heart failure from licking a cane toad!
