A Portrait in Progress
12.07.06 (10:47 pm)   [edit]

I've started a portrait of Marion.

I thought you might like to see the progress so far?

I started with pencil (normal lead, ie graphite, pencil) on pastel paper, followed by pastels & pastel pencil.

Remember, it's not finished yet.  There's more to do on her hair.  I have to make her nose easier to see from a distance (it's all hair, eyes, & mouth at the moment).  I still have to do her blouse, & the background.

It is so hard to take a good photo of a pencil sketch!

Here it is so far:

An animation of my work on Marion's portrait, so far.

Do you have any idea how difficult it is to paint accurate portraits?  You see, we know our loved ones face so well, we have studied it up close for years, we know what every little expression means, perhaps there is nobody who knows it better - so if the artist cannot see what we know, or sees something different than our perception of our loved one....!

While I was in the midst of chemo, I decided to work on art, something I haven't done since I was around 15. I was reading some books about it and I recall that all of them said the hardest part of learning to draw is seeing what's actually there, instead of relying on what we believe to be there. I look forward to seeing the portrait when it's finished.

I love various types of arts nomatter how absurd/abstract it maybe, but due to my severe cataracts in which the Veterans Hospital here based in Palo Alto, California, home of Stanford University, I will have to see my ophthamologist/optometrist again next year to get the final result before the operation due to my fluctations of my blood sugar levels due to my severe diabetes II. Your artistry is quite superb even though in your opinionated views(s) that you need some improvement, but your talent will exceed your expectations without you knowing it, and besides if I ever make it, one of the places I like to visit is Australia and enjoy the wonderful country of yours and indulge heavily into various types of seafood, especially "shrimp on the barbie" including giant lobsters, and meats like imu, ostrich, etc. Wish you luck with your artistry and achieve your (set standard) goals.

That's right ggirl, it's the art of seeing. I can see, so for me the hardest thing is how to use the materials & tools I have to closely imitate what I can see. I've been told by a full time established artist who exhibits widely that I "have a good eye", & that I paint like Matisse! hehe :-)

Thank-you for the compliment & positive forecast!

Yes, Australia is a wonderful country. When you visit Australia, try the Moreton Bay Bugs, & king prawns. Emus are native to Australia, & I've never eaten any. The ostrich is not native to Australia.

I've painted many pictures and even sold them on ebay but I would never be so brave as to paint a portrait. That is so hard and I admire anyone that can do it!

Oh, it's just a matter of 'having a go'! :-) I'd like to see your paintings, do you have any online at the moment, Lezah?
