Sleep - are you getting enough?
08.05.06 (2:36 pm)   [edit]

Hi everyone, haven't posted much lately because I've had another adult in my house 24/7 who has been getting on my nerves at times. I need some alone time every day, or I start climbing the walls!

Anyhow, I'm about to add a poll on one of the sidebars, so please vote - ie let us all know how much sleep you're not getting!

After that, let us all know why you are or are not getting enough sleep, okay? (by commenting, of course!)

My maternal grandmother lived into her 95th year, & I can remember when holidaying at her home as a child that Grandma used to go to bed early & she didn't get up early, either! Maybe that was the secret to her longevity? After all, she outlived all her ancestors that we've been able to trace, by lots of years!

I don't think I've had enough sleep since I was 7 1/2 years old! That was the year the firstborn started highschool & faced a long schoolbus ride to & from town, so he had to get up at 6am. My mother's never been someone to be walked all over, consequently she got all five of us up at 6am so that she didn't have to make more than one breakfast! I've been tired ever since. :-(

I suffered from exhaustion, stress, & sleep deprivation as a young mother. The children finally started sleeping through at about the age of 2 1/2 _years_ old, both of them! I can't say I've really recovered, physically & mentally, from all of that plus everything else which occurred as a result of pregnancy, labour, birth, & babies, which is why I didn't have a third child. :-(

Now it's hard to force myself to go to bed at a reasonable hour. I do love having "child free time" once they've gone to bed, however now that I have two teenagers I have to stay up real late for that! Plus of course some of the best tv programs are on too late - & I wouldn't want to miss out on anything fun! Sometimes I stay up on the internet until the early hours of the morning, but that's rare. What's your story?

Well, I tend to sleep exactly six hours a night. I don't set an alarm clock unless six hours will put me beyond the time I need to get up the next morning. Lately there have been an exception or two to my internal alarm clock, but I think it's a acouple of anomolies... Like my body telling me that "things are going to change here, " perhaps in a couple of months when I turn fifty.

surrogate, have you ever read that our (adult) sleep cycles are about 90 minutes long?
It would be an interesting experiment for you to get 9 hours sleep a night instead of 6, to see how differently you felt (& looked), imo.

Hey surrogate, don't forget to vote in the poll! It's on the top right of my blog.

During school, I head to bed between midnight and 1, then get up 1 hr. before class starts so my amount of sleep varies from 6-8 hrs. during school time. Then in the summer I go to bed at random times and get up and random times so then it really varies. Generally from 5-12 hrs. Haha. I have to have at least 5 to function, 6 to function half way well, and 7 to be "normal". That's my story.

My husband's grandmother is 96 and an excellent sleeper, and I have a friend who, at 45, is a chronic insomniac and looks about 60 so I think you're on to something! And on that note, I'm going to bed! :) Long drive tomorrow for the start of our holidays... (Thanks for the blog link, Bronwyn.)
