Afternoon delight
05.27.06 (10:51 pm)   [edit]

See if you can identify these two birds for me:

An unidentified grey bird

( - but remember, I live in Queensland, Australia!)

 An unidentified grey bird

Isn't that a sweet look?  He/she was in my lilly pilly tree.

I don't think I've ever seen this type before:

Another unknown bird

These two birds were both in my back garden this afternoon.

Another unidentified bird

I have two 'avenues' of trees:

Afternoon light striping the ground via an avenue of trees

This is part of my driveway:

My driveway through afternoon light

Isn't afternoon light through the trees gorgeous?

There is beauty all around.

Great pics... I believe the top bird is the littleorangethingious, and the bottom one is the black-headed gray-bodied, um... warbler.

That was quick surrogate! Actually, the first one is more grey than anything. My photos have been coming out too dark, they look lighter in my graphics program, & I've had to lighten them up, & I've still not been entirely successful

OOOOO!!! Is one a kookaburra, or however you spell it? That was my favorite song as a kid. *sings* "Kookaburra sits in the old gum tree/Merry, merry king of the bush is he/Laugh, Kookaburra, laugh/Gay your life must be" I bet they don't teach that one to kids anymore.

Hello Babe, if you scroll back to my blog post of the 22nd of March, you'll see lots of photos of a kookaburra which visited me then. I also learnt that song as a child. :-)

Hi, do you get Willie Wagtails over there in Qld too? I am from Perth, actually so it is really great to have another aussie blogger here. As to the birds you're asking about, haven't a clue really, though do have a book on Australian Birds.

Hi again, just checked up in my book, which is very old. NOisy Miner could be the top 2 pic's. Adult bird- brownish-grey above, tail tipped white; top of head, side of face black; wings tinged yellow; breast pale grey; abdomen white; bill, legs and fleshypatch behind eye yellow. Is that anything like it.

Me again, the 2 bottom Pic's maybe a Black- faced Cuckoo-shrike Adult Uniform pale bluish-grey; conspicious black forehead, face and throat, Paler below; bill and legs black.

Hi DO, thank-you for looking up my birds, that was kind of you. :-)
I think you may possibly be correct with the black faced cuckoo shrike, or at least close, as my bird looked a bit 'sleeker' than those I saw in a Google image search for same.
I don't think the first one was a noisy miner, though. It may have been something like a grey strike thrush, perhaps a female, because of the streaks on her chest?
