I spotted a kookaburra first thing this morning, & managed to get a couple of good photos out of the 18 (!) I took while trying to sneak up on it, with my Sony Cybershot 7.2 megapixel digital camera - aren't digital cameras wonderful?
This camera shy kookaburra flew away from me four times while I gradually snuck up on it.
I think most people think of kookaburras as being black & white birds - but as you can see, they also have blue & brown patches.
Kookaburras 'laugh', often together. Their call is like this: Koo koo koo koo kakakaka! The koos start as high notes, & the kas are lower notes. Kookaburras' calls together overlap, they sound like they are chortling together! I managed to get a last, unfortunately out-of -focus photograph of the kookaburra in flight:
In Primary School we learnt this song: "Kookaburra sits in an old gum tree, merry, merry king of the bush is he. Laugh, Kookaburra, laugh, Kookaburra, gay your life must be!" (Of course, the lyrics were written before 'gay' was commonly used to mean 'homosexual'.)

great photos! I took a photo of a red tail hawk cause I just happened to have my digital in my purse. Love those digitals!

these are fantastic pictures on your blog!
and i remember singing that song too, when i was little... i think it was on some sing-along video tape we had...
