Annoying Christians = the Religious Right?
10.29.05 (4:41 pm)   [edit]

I hate how, in a "Christian country" such as Australia, what I call "annoying Christians" insist on separating themselves from the rest of the majority of the population (ie most of the rest of us, the other Australian Christians) as they have in this news story

I believe they're called the 'religious right' in the US.

I find them so irritating & judgemental. I was brought up Christian, used to attend church every week, teach Sunday School as a teenager, got very into religion from about 22 - 30, & now just call myself "Christian" on forms without specifying a denomination, & I no longerĀ go to any church regularly.

Any Christian who just assumes another person is not Christian just because they don't believe & behave exactly as they do is an irritating git, imo.

I do, however, like the idea of meeting with like-minded people, whose company I enjoy, on a regular basis, to be inspired, & to be reminded of priorities - plus it makes for great social networking! :-)

Later edit: according to the Australian Bureau of Statistics2001 Census, at least 68% of Australians were then Christian, 11.7% either did not state their religious affiliation or inadequately described it, 15.5% claim no religion, & 4.9% were a religion other than Christian.

Christanity is not about a religion..it is about a relationship with Jesus Christ. Most people just don't get that part!

So, these Christians gather for a couple of days to consider some political issues, and you seem to consider such inappropriate? They are not forming a commune or attempting to force their views on you. They are trying to affect a positive change in the world around them. That, to me, seems appropriate.

IN the linked news story, Christians are holding a conference to discuss political issues and to prepare to influence an upcoming election. Then I think you refer to such as irritating and judgmental.

All kinds of groups, from all directions of political persuasion, seek to influence elections. Why accept that right from others, and then label Christians who do the same with such negative terms? There is a right and a wrong way to seek to influence another. If these Christians are calling others names and passing jugment upon them because of their political leanings, then they are wrong. But if they consider one candidate to more properly represent their political positions, then they should be able to support him/her.

I think one's faith should have an influence upon every aspect of life, including politics.

Do I still misconstrue? Let me know; sometimes I am dense.

PastorDave, & whoever else is reading this,
here is the linked news story:

"Christian lobby warns of growing electoral influence
The head of the Australian Christian Lobby says political parties should not underestimate the influence of Christian voters at election times.

The lobby group is holding its national conference in Canberra.

Chief executive Brigadier James Wallace says in a tight election the Christian vote could decide the outcome.

He says when it comes to issues like industrial relations reform, politicians should listen or potentially feel the impact at the ballot box.

The lobby says the Australian Labor Party abandoned the Christian constituency at the last election because of Mark Latham's denial of a spiritual life.

But Kim Beazley addressed the group this morning, openly speaking of his Christian faith.

The lobby says that address is likely to improve Labor's standing."

First of all, at least 68% of Australians were Christian in 2001, & I don't imagine that has changed drastically over the last four years. I am one of them. Christians are not in the minority in this country. Some Christians, perhaps like those mentioned in this news story, like to believe & act as though they are a persecuted minority - & they believe that the Christians who do not (say that they) believe precisely as they do are not Christians! That is the attitude of which I complain in my blog of the 29th of October.
Mr Beazley professes a Christian belief. I would hope that Christians would vote for a good, respectable, decent person over someone who just professes faith in Jesus Christ. (NB. I'm not saying that Mr Beazley isn't a good, respectable, decent person.)

The news story was not the be all & end all of my blog. It merely spurred me to write. The contents of my blog, ie what I have written, is what I would hope my readers would concentrate on, especially when commenting.
